An impressive 250 bags of Scotts growing media were used to create the gold-medal-winning ‘Chinese Dragon’ at this year’s RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park. The colourful beast was the creation of The British Protected Ornamentals Association (North West Group), which took gold for the fifth consecutive year.

Scotts sponsored the group by donating Levington M2 compost to produce the plants for the scheme, and Levington B2 compost to plant up the dragon. Levington peat-free compost was also used at Tatton Park for the beds around the display.

Scotts’ Derek Hampson commented: “We were delighted to support the group again and congratulations to them on the most stunning display. Promoting bedding plants to the horticultural world is important for us as a company, and by supplying the best possible growing media we are helping to continue the tradition of excellence at Tatton Park.”

Derek Smith, who created the Chinese Dragon, commented: “We are very grateful to Scotts for their sponsorship and the most wonderful compost for the plants. It took a tremendous amount of dedicated work from members of the North West Group to produce the dragon. The shape was scaled up from a toy and then a framework made with hundreds of welded re-enforced wires.

“The dragon was filled with B2 compost and then planted up in small squares. This was a slow process and the selection of planting material was crucial in obtaining the desired results. The dragon was constructed in several sections and the head alone weighed over 300kg.”
