Creeping Bentgrass

The new generation Penn Pals creeping bentgrasses were developed by Dr. Joe Duich from plant selections in Augusta, Georgia.  Selections were from the main Major Championship course and par 3 course greens showing dense, upright growth, close cutting height, very fine leaf texture and minimal spiking under high heat and humidity.

As a result Penn A1, Penn A4, Penn G2 and Penn G6 are a very dense-tillered, upright growing, consistently fast, virtually grainless putting green turf that will thrive at a close cutting height.  The new Penn Pals are sure to please the most critical groundsman and golfer.

General characteristics of the new Penn Pals creeping bentgrass for superior putting greens are:

• Fine texture, dense tillering and upright growth for tight, true putting surface that resist spiking and keeps out Poa annua.
• Improved heat and humidity stress tolerance and disease resistance, including Dollar Spot.
• Deep-rooting for better health, stress tolerance, and vigour through seasonal changes.
• Low mowing and good management is required to maintain the speed and accuracy today's players demand.

The tight, upright growth characteristics of Penn cultivars resist spiking.  In cooperative tests with NIKE shoes, steel spikes were compared with alternative types.  The new Penn bents indicated less spiking, and held stimpmeter readings of 10'.

Penn A1 and Penn G2 showed the best overall performance in this test.  Grown to a higher standard, be assured that the new Penn Pals will not only putt quicker, spike less and repair quickly, but they are grown to higher putting green quality standards by Oregon's most experienced creeping bentgrass producers.  If purity standards aren't met, that seed won't be marketed.  All turf seed is free of Poa annua, Poa trivialis, and all other noxious and objectionable weed seeds.

Penn A1
